About Hardpoint
Hardpoint is a free real-time strategy game that you play in your web browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to download or install. You build a fortified base, run an economy, produce modern tanks, artillery and helicopters, and fight for territory across a large map where you can only see what your own units can see.
Why it exists
Hardpoint started as a personal project inspired by the old browser strategy game Alpha Wars, a game about building a base, growing an economy and capturing the bases around you. We wanted a game in that spirit that felt fast to learn and deep enough to keep playing: a map full of bases to fight over, an economy with real choices, and opponents that play by the same rules you do. It is a separate game with its own code, art and balance, and it is not affiliated with Alpha Wars or its creators.
The name comes from the military term for a fortified position that is held, or fought over. Every base in the game is one.
What makes it different
- Fog of war for everyone. The AI opponents cannot see through the dark either. They use their own scouting and memory, never the true game state, so a surprise attack works on them the same way it works on you.
- Real choices in the army. There are ten ground vehicles and nine helicopters, each with a clear job and a clear counter. Costs and strengths were tuned by running thousands of simulated equal-cost battles between every pair of units.
- Capture, don't just destroy. Bases are taken with an APC after their defences fall, and a captured base joins your economy.
- Play alone or together. Fight up to nine AI rivals on any difficulty, or invite friends into a multiplayer room, with an option where all the humans team up against the AIs.
- Runs anywhere. It works on desktop and on phones and tablets, with touch controls, and saves your progress in your browser or, if you sign in, online across your devices.
How it is made
Hardpoint is built by an independent developer with an AI coding assistant. The game is written in plain JavaScript and drawn on a canvas, so it loads quickly and has no plugins. The multiplayer server runs the same game rules as the browser version, which keeps matches fair, and sends each player only what they are allowed to see. Accounts, saves and statistics are stored with Supabase, sign-in uses Google or email, and the site runs on Cloudflare.
Credits
- The Leopard 2 A6 tank artwork is rendered from a 3D model by "buh", used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (original on Sketchfab). We joined and renamed its objects, recoloured the faces and rendered it in Blender.
- Everything else is drawn in code or made for the game.
